An altar call is a tradition in some Christian churches in which those who wish to make a new spiritual commitment to Jesus Christ are invited to come forward publicly. It is so named because the supplicants gather at the altar located at the front of the church building.
An altar is a raised area in a house of worship where people can honor God with offerings. The word altar comes from the Latin altārium, meaning “high,” and also to the Latin adolere, which means “to ritually burn or sacrifice,” which suggests its early purpose as detailed in the Bible.
In later religions, the altar became the symbolic focus of sacrifice. Traditionally, Christian services would make the altar the place where wine and bread were consecrated before being distributed during mass. For denominations that have mass, I believe this is still true.
An altar is a place of sacrifice and a power point to draw spiritual and supernatural strength (Genesis 8:20-21). Altars are places of separation where we separate ourselves to God and separate from curses and generational traits.
According to the Bible , the fire on the altar was lit directly by the hand of God and was not permitted to go out (Leviticus 6:12–13). No strange fire could be placed upon the altar . The burnt offerings would remain on the altar throughout the night before they could be removed (Leviticus 6:9).
The functions of the altar have remained the same in Christian churches down the centuries. During Mass, it serves as a table to hold a copy of the Bible and the consecrated bread and wine that are distributed to worshipers. One to three cloths cover the altar , and a cross and candles may be placed on or near it.
Pulpit , in Western church architecture, an elevated and enclosed platform from which the sermon is delivered during a service.
Altar – This is the most noticeable feature of a Roman Catholic Church . In traditional cruciform churches the altar stands in the middle of the east wall, at the top of the cross shaped building.
In the homes, family members honor their deceased with ofrendas or offerings which may consist of photographs, bread , other foods, flowers, toys and other symbolic offerings. Altars may contain all hand-made items or ones that have been purchased.
This holiday is a time when we believe that the veil, or division, between the afterlife and the living is made easier to cross allowing our loved ones that have died to come back and share a time with us again. A Dia de los Muertos ( Day of the Dead ) altar is meant to honor the memory of someone who touched your life.
Ofrendas are an essential part of the Day of the Dead celebrations. The word ofrenda means offering in Spanish. They are also called altares or altars , but they are not for worship. Some people mistakenly think that Mexicans that set up ofrendas for their defunct relatives are actually worshiping them.
